Why people love participating Fish extenders can be a sweet way to make the cruise feel more personal. There is something fun about coming back to your stateroom and finding a small surprise waiting in your pocket. For families, kids often love the delivery part just as much as receiving gifts. Walking the hallways, finding cabin numbers, and dropping off treats can feel like a little treasure hunt. That is reason enough to pass. Skipping can be the right choice if: This is your first cruise and you want to keep things simple You are flying and need to limit luggage You are sailing on a tighter budget You do not enjoy crafting or shopping for group gifts Your schedule before the trip is already full You prefer not to join Facebook groups or organized activities No one should feel pressured to participate just because other families are doing it. I have enjoyed cruises where I participated fully, cruises where we only pixie dusted, and cruises where we skipped it completely. Each one was fun in a different way. Here is a simple way to look at it: Join a full fish extender exchange Pixie dust only Skip it completely Best if you enjoy planning, gifting, and connecting with other cruisers before sailing. Best if you want a low-pressure way to spread a little magic. Best if you want less packing and less planning. If you do join a full exchange, commit to it. Read the group rules, note delivery deadlines, pack your gifts carefully, and bring your fish extender. A little planning ahead makes the onboard experience much smoother. Animal Kingdom is the park many Disney World guests are most willing to skip. The usual reason is simple: they think it is “just a zoo.” That take sells the park short. Yes, Animal Kingdom has incredible animal habitats, walking trails, and safari experiences. But it also has Pandora, Expedition Everest, some of the best atmosphere at Walt Disney World, strong dining, and a future that is getting even more exciting. If you are building a Disney World itinerary and trying to decide what stays and what gets cut, Animal Kingdom deserves a closer look. Animal Kingdom is not just a zoo Animal Kingdom does have animals, and that is a huge part of what makes it special. Kilimanjaro Safaris can feel different every time you ride because the animals are real and the experience changes throughout the day. The walking trails also give the park a slower, more peaceful pace than Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios. But the park is not built like a traditional zoo. It is a full theme park with major rides, shows, dining, entertainment, and immersive lands. The biggest example is Pandora, The World of Avatar. Even if you are not a huge Avatar fan, the land itself is stunning. The floating mountains, glowing nighttime details, and sound design make it one of the most immersive areas at Walt Disney World. Then there is Avatar Flight of Passage, which is one of the most popular rides on property for a reason. It is thrilling without being too intense for many guests, and the scale of the attraction makes it feel like a true Disney headliner. Animal Kingdom also has Expedition Everest, a classic roller coaster with great theming and a fun backwards section. For families who enjoy a mix of thrills and scenery, it is a must-do. The food is better than many guests expect Animal Kingdom is one of the best Disney parks for food, especially if you want something beyond standard theme park meals. Yak & Yeti is a favorite for many guests because it offers a sit-down meal with flavorful Asian-inspired dishes in a really detailed setting. It is a great lunch spot if you want a true mid-day break from the heat. For character dining, Tusker House is a strong option. It gives families a chance to meet characters while enjoying a meal that feels a little different from the usual buffet lineup. That can save time too, since you get food and character interaction in one stop. Quick-service options also stand out. Satu’li Canteen in Pandora is often praised because it feels lighter and fresher than typical park food. If you are trying to avoid another burger-and-fries meal, Animal Kingdom makes that easy. You can do Animal Kingdom as a half-day park One of the best arguments for keeping Animal Kingdom in your plans is that it does not have to take a full day. If your trip is packed, Animal Kingdom works well as a half-day park, especially in the middle of your vacation. This is a smart way to enjoy the highlights without feeling like you are sacrificing a full rest day. A simple plan could look like this: Arrive in the morning. Head to Kilimanjaro Safaris early. Ride Expedition Everest while waits are manageable. Use a paid individual Lightning Lane Single Pass for Flight of Passage if it fits your budget. Have lunch at Yak & Yeti, Satu’li Canteen, or Tusker House. Return to your resort for pool time and a slower evening. That type of day gives you the best of both worlds. You still experience a Disney park, but you also get a break from the go-go-go pace that can wear everyone down by day three or four. This is especially helpful for families with younger kids, multi-generational groups, or anyone staying at a resort with a pool they actually want to enjoy. Save your Lightning Lane budget for the ride that matters most If you are trying to save money, Animal Kingdom is one park where you may not need Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Wait times vary by date, weather, crowd level, and park hours. Still, many guests can enjoy a solid Animal Kingdom morning without buying Multi Pass for the whole group. The park has fewer must-book attractions compared with Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios, which makes it easier to be selective. The one ride worth watching closely is Avatar Flight of Passage. Its standby line often gets long, and it is the attraction most guests regret missing. If the ride is a priority, a Lightning Lane Single Pass can be a better use of money than buying Multi Pass for the whole park. That does not mean everyone needs to buy it. If you are visiting on a lower-crowd day, arriving early, or willing to wait, standby may work. But if your goal is to save time and avoid the longest line, Flight of Passage is the place to focus your budget. Tropical Americas makes the park’s future even more exciting Animal Kingdom is also changing in a big way. Disney has announced plans for a new Tropical Americas land, expected to open in 2027. This new area is planned to include an Indiana Jones attraction and the first-ever Encanto-themed attraction. For guests who have been waiting for more Encanto representation in the parks, that is a big deal. The new land gives Animal Kingdom even more reason to stay on future itineraries. It also shows that Disney is continuing to invest in the park, rather than letting it sit as the easy-to-skip option. If you are visiting before the new land opens, Animal Kingdom is still worth your time. If you are planning a future trip around 2027 or later, it may become even harder to leave out. Who should make Animal Kingdom a priority Animal Kingdom is a great fit if you want a park day that feels different from the others. It is not as ride-heavy as Magic Kingdom, and it does not have the same intense schedule pressure as Hollywood Studios. That is part of the appeal. It is especially worth including if you love: Immersive lands like Pandora Thrill rides such as Expedition Everest Unique dining instead of basic park meals Animals and nature trails A slower morning with room to breathe Character dining in a relaxed setting It may not need to be your longest park day. It may not require the biggest ticket add-ons. But skipping it completely can mean missing one of the most detailed and beautiful parks Disney has ever built. Animal Kingdom does not have to compete with Magic Kingdom for a full-day spot. It can serve a different role in your vacation: part park day, part rest day, and part reminder that Disney World is at its best when every park has its own personality. When my oldest daughter turned 4 she wanted a "Beauty and the Beast" birthday party. The girls dressed up like princesses, we painted tea cups, and I just knew it wouldn't be complete without serving the "grey stuff" for dessert. I searched for a copycat recipe and there were tons out there, all consisting of the same basic ingredients, pudding mix, whipped topping, chopped Oreos and milk. It was a very easy recipe to make and everyone loved it. Since that 4th birthday party 7 years ago, we have made this dessert numerous times. It's been used to top brownies and cupcakes, taken to dinner parties, served to celebrate special occasions and most recently it was requested as an end of the first week of school treat. I have tweaked this simple recipe to what my girls believe is the best version of the grey stuff. They said it's even slightly better than what is served at Be Our Guest in Walt Disney World! I like my version because it's easy, doesn't leave any partly used pudding pouches and makes enough for leftovers. We have found that it takes even better the next day. Here's what you'll need: 15-17 Oreo cookies chopped in a food processor 2 1/2 cups of milk 1 package instant vanilla pudding mix (5.1 oz box) 1 package instant chocolate pudding mix (3.9 oz box) whipped Topping (16 oz) white sugar pearl sprinkles for decoration mixing bowl Here are the 4 simple steps you need to follow. In a mixing bowl whisk milk and both boxes of pudding. 2. Fold in chopped Oreos. 3. Fold in whipped topping. 4. Serve in bowl or teacup, or on top of brownies or cupcakes and top with pearl sprinkles. What is a Fish Extender? This is an optional gift exchange similar to a Secret Santa between a group of 10 cabins or so. It's called a Fish Extender because you hang your basket to gather gifts on your door's fish hook. This is not an activity organized by Disney, but by cruise passengers, and it's very popular on Disney Cruises. So, how do you get involved in this gift exchange? If you want to connect with shipmates prior to your sailing, you can find a Facebook group for your cruise by searching your ship name and sail date. Fish Extender groups are organized within these Facebook groups. In order to participate, you will need a hanging basket outside your stateroom door to collect your gifts. You can easily make an attractive hanger with a few items you can purchase from Amazon that aren't very expensive. Here's how you can make your own fish extender hanging basket cheaply and easily! First, start with a hanging organizer with pockets. I like this one because it's the perfect size to fit next to your cabin door, and it has nice, deep, sturdy pockets. Next, personalize with iron-on patches. It's a really good idea to add names. This will help shipmates in your fish extender group know they have the correct stateroom for your gifts. You can add your last name or the first names of the family members who are participating in the gift exchange. On mine, I used one-inch iron-on letters for our last name. The one-inch letters were a good size. Once the letters are in place, you can embellish your project with character patches. I added my daughter's favorite Disney princesses. If you want a patch that will nicely fill the outside space of the pocket, look for one 3 inches in diameter. Here are some you might like! No time to make your own? Check out these fish extenders from Amazon. They have 3 styles including a Christmas design if you are headed on a Merrytime cruise. Disney cruisers also enjoy decorating their doors. I have made my own magnets using magnetic sheets. Making your own allows for a lot of creativity, but as you can see from my picture, if you go too large, they don't stick as well. Rope dropping EPCOT sounds simple until you remember the park has two entrances, and they do not set you up for the same morning. Choose the wrong one, and you can spend your first hour walking across the park instead of getting on a ride. The short answer is this: use the Main Entrance for Soarin’, Test Track, or Guardians of the Galaxy. Use International Gateway for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure or Frozen Ever After. That one choice can shape the whole start of your EPCOT day. Start at the Main Entrance for Soarin’, Test Track, or Guardians The Main Entrance is the front entrance of EPCOT. This is the entrance most guests picture when they think of arriving at the park, with Spaceship Earth straight ahead. If your goal is one of these attractions, the Main Entrance is the better rope drop choice: Soarin’ Test Track Guardians of the Galaxy This entrance puts you closer to the front half of the park, which is where these rides make the most sense as a first stop. You will still need to walk with purpose, but you are not starting from the far edge of World Showcase. The tradeoff is crowd size. The Main Entrance usually draws the larger morning crowd. Guests arriving by bus, car, rideshare, and monorail all feed into this area. That means security, tapstiles, and the first wave toward attractions can feel more packed. That does not make it a bad choice. It just means you should treat timing seriously. If you want to rope drop from the Main Entrance, plan to arrive early enough that you are not at the back of the pack when the park starts moving. A good Main Entrance morning looks like this: Arrive before official park opening. Clear security and get in position. Know your first attraction before you enter. Walk directly there without stopping for photos or coffee. Save browsing, snacks, and wandering for later. Rope drop is not the time to debate your first ride in the middle of the walkway. Decide before you scan in. Start at International Gateway for Remy’s or Frozen The International Gateway is EPCOT’s back entrance, located between the France and United Kingdom areas of World Showcase. It is much smaller than the Main Entrance, but it can be extremely useful if your first ride is in World Showcase. Use International Gateway if you want to get in line for: Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Frozen Ever After For Remy’s, this is the obvious choice. International Gateway places you very close to the France pavilion, so you can head toward Remy’s quickly without crossing half the park. Frozen Ever After is a little more interesting. Physically, Frozen is closer to the Main Entrance than Remy’s is. You can enter from the front of EPCOT and head toward Norway without an extremely long walk. But that is not the whole story. The Main Entrance pulls in a much larger crowd. If a big chunk of that crowd is also heading toward Frozen, the line can build fast. International Gateway may involve a different walking route, but the smaller entry crowd can make the morning feel smoother. That is why I usually group Frozen with International Gateway for rope drop strategy. The math is not only about distance. It is about how many people are starting with you. The key difference is crowd flow, not just distance When people ask which EPCOT entrance is better, they often want a single answer. But there is no one best entrance for every plan. There is only the best entrance for your first ride. Main Entrance International Gateway Main Entrance crowd level International Gateway crowd level Best access Best access Best for Soarin’, Test Track, and Guardians of the Galaxy Best for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Frozen Ever After Usually heavier in the morning Usually lighter and more manageable Main Entrance works well for buses, parking, rideshare, and monorail International Gateway works well for Skyliner and nearby EPCOT resorts The biggest mistake is picking an entrance based only on where you are staying or which one sounds easier. Location matters, but your first attraction matters more. If you enter through International Gateway and then try to rope drop Soarin’, you will spend valuable early minutes walking from World Showcase toward The Land pavilion. By the time you arrive, guests from the Main Entrance may already be in front of you. The same is true in reverse. If you enter through the Main Entrance and want Remy’s, you are starting far from France. Guests from International Gateway will have a major head start. That is why Where Should You Rope Drop EPCOT Main Entrance or International Gateway comes down to matching the entrance with the ride, not picking the entrance that looks best on a map. International Gateway is easiest from these resorts International Gateway is especially convenient if you are staying near Crescent Lake or on the Disney Skyliner route. It is located right next to Disney’s Beach Club Resort. It is also easily walkable from: Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Disney’s BoardWalk Inn Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin area resorts If you are staying at one of these, International Gateway is a huge perk. You can walk to EPCOT without dealing with buses or the front parking area. It is also directly next to the Disney Skyliner station. That makes it easy to reach from Skyliner resorts, including resorts connected through the Skyliner system. If your morning plan is Remy’s or Frozen, and you have Skyliner access, International Gateway can be a very strong choice. Just give yourself enough time. The Skyliner is convenient, but mornings can still bring lines, transfers, and pauses. Do not cut it too close and assume you will glide right to the entrance with no delay. A simple way to choose your EPCOT rope drop entrance If you only remember one thing, make it this: Pick your entrance based on your first ride, then build the rest of your morning around that choice. Here is the simplest breakdown. Choose the Main Entrance if your first priority is: Soarin’ Test Track Guardians of the Galaxy Staying in the front half of the park early Arriving by car, bus, monorail, or rideshare Choose International Gateway if your first priority is: Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure Frozen Ever After Entering with a smaller morning crowd Walking from Beach Club, Yacht Club, or BoardWalk Arriving by Skyliner Also, check the My Disney Experience app before your park day. Attraction access, operating status, and opening procedures can change. Guardians of the Galaxy in particular has used different access systems, so confirm what is available for your date. My recommendation For most EPCOT mornings, I would not overcomplicate it. If your heart is set on Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, use International Gateway. If you are staying at a Skyliner resort or within walking distance of the back entrance, this is even easier. If your goal is Soarin’, Test Track, or Guardians, use the Main Entrance and arrive early enough to handle the larger crowd. For Frozen Ever After, International Gateway often makes sense even though Norway is not as far from the front as France is. The smaller crowd at International Gateway can help, especially when a lot of guests from the Main Entrance are heading the same way. The best EPCOT rope drop plan is not the one with the shortest walk on paper. It is the one that gets you into the right line with the least wasted time. Here is the cruise detail that catches a lot of first-time Disney cruisers off guard: you may be able to board the ship as early as 11:00 a.m., but your checked luggage may not arrive at your stateroom until sometime between about 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. That gap matters. If your swimsuits, sunscreen, sunglasses, medications, or documents are in your checked bags, you could spend the first few hours of your vacation waiting instead of enjoying the ship. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is not cheap, and most families do not book it because they are trying to trim the vacation budget. They book it for the Halloween fun, the parade, the costumes, the fireworks, the candy, and the chance to experience Magic Kingdom in a completely different way. Still, there is real value tucked into that party ticket. When you compare the cost of a regular Magic Kingdom day ticket with the cost of a party ticket, the gap may not be as wide as you expect, depending on your travel dates. The party also comes with lower crowds, shorter attraction waits, fun ride overlays, exclusive entertainment, cooler evening temperatures, and a full trick-or-treat bag by the end of the night. That does not make it a “budget” event. It does mean you can be strategic and get more out of what you already paid for. 1. You can skip a regular Magic Kingdom day ticket One of the biggest ways a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party ticket can save money is by replacing a regular park day. Party tickets are separate admission. On party days, guests with event tickets can typically enter Magic Kingdom before the official party starts in the evening. That gives you several hours in the park before the Halloween festivities begin, without buying a separate daytime Magic Kingdom ticket for that same date. That is where the savings can show up. You can slow the day down and still get a full evening of Magic Kingdom fun. My favorite way to handle party day is to enjoy the resort in the morning. Sleep in a little. Have breakfast without rushing. Swim. Rest. Let everyone recharge before a late night. Then head to Magic Kingdom a little before 4:00 p.m. There will likely be a line to get in, so do not cut it too close if you have plans inside the park. A 4:15 dining reservation can be perfect. It gives you a calm landing spot before the party gets going. Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen is one of our favorite pre-party dinner choices because it gives everyone a real meal, a place to sit, and time to look over the party map. That slower start matters. You are not trying to squeeze every ounce out of a rope-drop-to-fireworks day. You are saving your energy for the event you actually paid for. 2. You will not need to buy Lightning Lane passes Lightning Lane passes can add a lot to a Disney day, especially for families trying to ride as much as possible with limited time. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party usually has lower crowds than a regular Magic Kingdom day because attendance is limited for the event. That does not mean every ride is a walk-on. Popular attractions can still have waits, and character meet-and-greets can draw long lines. But overall, party nights often feel much easier to navigate than a packed daytime visit. That can save money in two ways. First, you may skip paid Lightning Lane passes entirely for that day. If your main goal is to enjoy attractions during the party, the lower wait times may be enough. Second, you may avoid the “we need to buy this because we are stressed” feeling that can happen on a busy park day. A party ticket naturally limits the scope of your plans. You are not trying to conquer every land, every show, every snack, and every photo spot from morning to night. You can pick your priorities and let the party atmosphere do some of the work. The ride overlays also add value. A familiar attraction can feel more special during the Halloween party, which means you are not just paying for shorter lines. You are getting a version of Magic Kingdom that does not exist on a normal day. A practical plan helps here: Choose a few must-do attractions before you arrive. Save the most popular party entertainment on your schedule first. Ride during parades or later in the evening if attractions are your top priority. Do not waste prime party time crisscrossing the park without a plan. The real savings is not only the cost of skipping Lightning Lane. It is also the value of doing more with less friction. 3. You leave with candy for the rest of your trip This one sounds small until you see the candy haul. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party includes trick-or-treat trails throughout the park, and guests can collect candy during the event. By the end of the night, it is very possible to leave with a full bag of candy. Is it going to offset the entire ticket price? No. But can it cut down on snack purchases later in the trip? Absolutely. A bag of candy in the hotel room can help with: A quick treat after pool time Something sweet while waiting for transportation A small snack between meals A fun surprise for kids the next morning A little dessert without buying one more thing Theme park snacks add up quickly. Even when you plan ahead, it is easy to grab “just one more” treat when everyone is tired, hot, or waiting in line. Having party candy on hand gives you an easy backup. It also stretches the fun past the event itself. The party does not feel like one-and-done when the candy comes back to the room and lasts for several days. If you are staying on property, pack a few zip-top bags in your park bag. When you get back to the resort, sort the candy so it is easier to grab later. Keep chocolate somewhere cool, especially if you are visiting during the warmer part of the Halloween season. This is not huge savings, but it is a real perk that comes with the ticket. If you buy a regular park ticket for the same day, add paid ride access, eat extra snacks all day, and arrive at the party already exhausted, you lose a lot of the built-in value. If you rest, eat early, enter around the event admission time, and focus on the experiences that make the party special, the ticket stretches much further. A simple party day plan that makes the ticket worth more Here is an easy rhythm for getting the most value out of the night: Morning Sleep in, swim, and enjoy your resort. Do not spend the day wearing everyone out. Early afternoon Rest, shower, and get into costumes or Halloween outfits. Before 4:00 p.m. Head toward Magic Kingdom. Expect a line at entry and give yourself extra time. Around 4:15 p.m. Book an early dinner, if that fits your plans. Skipper Canteen is a great choice if your family wants a sit-down meal before the party starts. During dinner Review the party map. Choose your must-do entertainment, top rides, and trick-or-treat stops. Party time Focus on what is exclusive to the event first. You can ride many Magic Kingdom attractions on other days, but the parade, shows, overlays, and Halloween atmosphere are the reason you bought the ticket. Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is still a splurge. But when you use the ticket to replace a park day, skip extra ride purchases, and take advantage of the included candy and entertainment, the price tag starts to make more sense. Summer months can be a great time to visit Walt Disney World. Summer offers a slow down period for many families. Breaks from school and sports allows perfect windows of time for travel. Summer months in Orlando also bring rain and very, very warm weather. It's important to arrive prepared so you can make the most of your Walt Disney World vacation. Here are my must have items to help you save money, time and stay comfortable during your visit to Walt Disney World. Some links on this website are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. 1.Start with a backpack with lots of compartments to keep you organized. I like this Adidas backpack. It has 4 outside zippered pockets and two side pockets for water bottles. When packing your bag, try to travel light. You don't want to be lugging around a ton of extra stuff, only bring what you anticipate you will need for that day. 2. Taking a collapsible water bottle will save you time and money. Camelbak makes a great quick stow flask or you can purchase the larger Camelbak hydration pack. Quick service kiosks will provide free ice water that can be used for refills, so for my family we have found the quick stow flask works just fine. I've had no issues with leaks with the Camelbak quick stow flask and these flasks take up very little room in my park bag. I can fit one flask into each water bottle pocket of my Adidas park backpack. 3. Having a personal fan will keep you cool while you are walking around the park or waiting for attractions. Aluan Handheld Mini Fan has a lanyard so it can be worn around your neck This fan is small, lightweight and powerful which makes it a great choice! You will need to remember to charge this fan at night, as the battery only last about a day. 4. Some travelers prefer cooling towels to personal fans. I have tried both, and while I prefer personal fans, Frogg Toggs does make a great cooling towel. Cooling towels are good options for anyone who doesn't like the idea of needing to recharge a fan, but keep in mind the towels do need to be frequently re-wet with cold water. 5. Summer months in Orlando are rainy. Summer showers are very common and usually pass quickly. If you are prepared with ponchos and water shoes the rain shouldn't cause much of a problem. Many times, the passing shower can even thin out the crowds a bit! You'll want to bring along a good reusable poncho. As showers come and go quite often, you may need your poncho more than once. This one from Frogg Toggs is inexpensive and large enough to fit over your park bag keeping you and your belongs dry through the passing showers. 6. Wearing or bringing shoes that can handle a little rain is a good idea. A quick way to ruin a park day is having to walk around in wet socks and tennis shoes.
